Contraction of the heart muscle is controlled by the cardiac conducting system, which consists of the sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node, and atrioven- tricular bundle of His (Figure 8-4).
The stimu- lus for cardiac contraction originates in the sinoatrial node, the pacemaker of the heart.
the sinoatrial node and delays it slightly, allowing the atria time to empty before the ventricles contract.
Each part of it can conduct or initiate an impulse on its own, but the rhythm is con- trolled because the sinoatrial node fires first. when the sinoatrial node is not functioning properly, cardiac arrhythmias occur.
The sinus venosus functions early as the pacemaker of the conducting system of the heart and is the precur- sor to the sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node, and bundle of His.
